Alternative fuel vehicles

Although gasoline and diesel fuels dominate the landscape today, alternative fuels are used to power vehicles in specialized applications. For instance, in Tokyo, many taxi cabs are fueled by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Forklifts, as well, often use LPG as fuel. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is used in similar applications.

While alternative fuels often burn cleaner than gasoline or diesel fuel, they nonetheless produce emission products such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM).

Historically, alternative fuels have been used in material-handling applications because they are inherently cleaner burning. However, given strict new regulator standards, vehicles used in enclosed areas such as warehouses must be cleaned up in order to maintain compliance and protect employee health.

BASF manufactures a wide range of catalytic converters. Designed to provide the flexibility needed when using different kinds of fuels, our AFV catalysts reduce HC, CO, PM and NOx in alternative fuel vehicles, including CNG, LPG and bi-fuel vehicles.
