For example, turbochargers add power and increase the economy of internal combustion engines. Their performance attributes are making them more popular with engine designers. For top performance, turbocharger rotors demand precise tolerances. In many cases, the required degree of precision is not attainable through traditional casting and machining processes.

BASFs abradable coatings are selectively abraded by the rubbing action of the rotating components. When applied to a turbocharger unit, the rotor actually "machines" its own clearance in the coating housing. This provides a precise seal with excellent performance characteristics.
