Power Generation

BASF Catalysts provides a full range of engineered coating services to meet the coating needs of customers in the manufacture of high-quality gas turbine engines for both OEM and overhaul and repair applications. Our coatings impart essential material characteristics to blades and housings.

The energy and heat generated by turbines and turbomachinery can degrade components and reduce the operating efficiency of the engine. BASF Catalysts thermal barrier coatings, when applied to housings, combustion liners, and other components, help control excessive heat and protect turbine components.

Friction between moving parts of turbomachinery can degrade components and interfere with operations. BASF Catalysts wear control coatings prolong the life of critical turbomachinery parts by as much as ten-fold. The coatings commonly are applied to retainers/clips, blade notches, blade roots, tubes, collars, hatchets, seals, sleeves, and fuel nozzles.

Turbochargers add power and increase the economy of internal combustion engines. Their performance attributes are making them more popular with engine designers. For top performance, turbocharger rotors demand precise tolerances. In many cases, the required degree of precision is not attainable through traditional casting and machining processes. BASF Catalysts's abradable coatings are selectively abraded by the rubbing action of the rotating components. When applied to a turbocharger unit, the rotor actually "machines" its own clearance in the coating housing. This provides a precise seal with excellent performance characteristics.

Thermal spray coatings can prevent corrosion and erosion damage to critical turbomachinery parts. We offer a full line of corrosion protection coatings for use on a wide variety of parts and in numerous operating conditions. Examples include oxidation-resistant coatings that help prevent premature failure of "hot section" turbine components, such as shrouds, buckets and rings, and solid particle erosion coatings that extend the life of steam turbines by protecting critical components, such as buckets, diaphragms and valve stems/disks.

BASF Catalysts professionals work with customers to test and carefully profile each customer's unique turbine environment before developing the appropriate coating solution.
